Bruce Harkness FRAS

Born in New York to Australian parents and raised in California, Bruce is a self-taught contemporary landscape and seascape artist living in Sydney. In his childhood, he was encouraged to produce his colourful, imaginative drawings, and, as a young adult, he attended classes at Sydney's National Art School, and in later years, evening classes at The Royal Art Society of NSW, as well as day classes with artist Sarah Aylward.

A fruitful career in the advertising industry as an art director and graphic designer gave him the creative freedom he'd always sought including the opportunity to hone and use his drawing and visualising skills.to present concepts in print media.

Since 1998, Bruce has been an exhibiting artist, working mostly in acrylics on canvas, and has established himself in many private collections, both here and overseas. Through his paintings of real and imagined sea and landscapes, he seeks to evoke a feeling of peace and quiet mystique. “I consider my works to be a blend of contemporary realism with a surrealistic style…some of my works may appear to be of an actual place but they are conceptual”.

His most recent award was 1st prize – Traditional Representation at the Royal Motor Yacht Club’s 2013 Marine Art Exhibition for his painting ‘Timber Dinghy, Clareville Beach’.
