Franken Lin

Like many others, when I was young, I had to work hard to make a living. It wasn't until after retirement that I could pick up my childhood dream and explore art through brushes and paints on canvas—discovering, thinking and expressing myself.

In the 1990s, I was a member of the Royal Photographic Society and received awards at international photography salons. Later, I took a six month life drawing course at Sydney Community College which sparked a deep interest in painting.

I’m an amateur painter; everything is self-taught. Museums, galleries, books, Instagram, WikiArt,… are all my teachers. I regard Faure Elie 《History of Art》as the Bible in the field of art. I have been learning and practicing various painting techniques and I have also experimented with different styles, including Impressionism, the Nabis and Modern Expressionism, among others. It seems I have no intention of staying within any particular style, even though I admire them all; I do not consider myself part of any of them.

I find it challenging, yet rewarding, to combine seemingly meaningless particles of colour into a painting that expresses a particular idea of mine and I will strive for this goal.
