Paul McKenzie

Paul (born 1952) has been painting in oils since his early teens. His main areas of artistic interest have been portraiture, landscape and marine art. He is largely self-taught but has benefited from night classes in life drawing at the National Art School, weekend classes in oil painting at the Julian Ashton School and masterclasses at the Flemish Atelier in Brugge, Belgium. He has also had some experience in sculpture, and decorative arts such as woodgraining, marbling and gilding.

He was a medical specialist and Director in Tissue Pathology and Diagnostic Oncology at RPA Hospital, a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Sydney and a past President of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia. He was awarded an OAM for services to Medicine in 2018. The more than 50 years of anatomic and microscopic observation, focussing on the interpretation of complex visual information, has inevitably influenced his artistic viewpoint in which he favours clarity and realism in landscape and the depiction of the humanity in his portrait subjects.

Retirement in 2021 has allowed painting to become a primary focus and for him to exhibit his work. He is also a member of Drummoyne Art Society and the Australian Society of Marine Artists.

He has exhibited work at Blue Mountains Portraits (2021, 2023), Salon des Refusees (2022) and the Drummoyne Art Society since 2022.
