Peter Whelan FRAS, ASMA

Peter had art training at an early age entering East Sydney art School night courses at seventeen. Much later he did three years of evening study at  Meadowbank Art School along with part time portrait training with Joshua Smith and Yve Close.

After pursuing a successful business career and raising a family, Peter still found time to pursue his passion to paint .He says his main art training has been on the countless plein-air painting trips taken over thirty years with other professional artists all over N.S.W. and all coastal regions.

Because most of his paintings are done plein-air and in all weather conditions they must be completed in a short time frame in a loose impressionistic style which does not allow for much detail. However, this style of painting still requires strong drawing skills along with a love of the subject.  Peters great love is Sydney Harbour and its bays and estuaries and the older well used boats and marine odds and ends sometimes found around its marina’s and moorings.  He paints mostly in oils, and acrylics, and has now included contemporary and abstract painting into his various works.

Peter is a Fellow of the Royal Art Society of N.S.W. and previous council member. He is an exhibiting member of the Aust. Society of marine artists.
