Stan Stefaniak ARAS, FASMA
Born in Sydney in 1954 and now residing in the Blue Mountains, Stan is an Associate Member of the Royal Art Society of NSW and Fellow and former President of the Australian Society of Marine Artists.
Through his association and study with various artists and art societies over the years Stan has developed a broad artistic appreciation. Having studied art under Ross Davis in Sydney, Stan expressively uses colour in both his marine paintings and works inspired by the Blue Mountains environment to engage the viewer, elicit an emotion and to convey a story.
Stan’s interest in painting maritime subjects spans virtually his whole life from a love of ships and his unrealised career ambition in the merchant navy. Experiences of numerous sea voyages, a keen observation of ship design and careful research into actual shipping events guide Stan in faithfully executing his paintings. Stan aims to interpret the marine art style of yesteryear through the use of expressive elements. He believes that the whole painting ought to capture a mood, the history and spirit of shipping and tell today’s continuing maritime story.
Stan explores the boundaries between representational art and abstraction in his ‘Mountains’ inspired work. The natural and cultivated flora and scenery of the Blue Mountains provide Stan with inspiration to extend his use of colour, whilst reimagining the drawing by pushing the boundary towards abstraction .However, Stan’s focus is to explore colour relationships in all his work and he views his broad approach to painting and drawing as being complimentary by applying similar artistic principles.
